SPORTS – LUMBERJACK – EVENTS OF THE MAJOR CONTESTS

In major tournaments, in addition to the events we have seen already the following will also be included:

Tree Topping (or falling):

This is an event based on timing. Time starts ticking when the “Go” signal is given and stops when the competitors “cut” lands on the ground. The contestant will be standing near the selected tree, one foot on the ground and the other ready for climbing. On “go” signal, he will start climbing the tree and start cutting the portion nearest the top of the tree. The top of the tree must be severed totally and it should be pushed to the ground as well. If the contestant requires a safety rope, he can use one. The minimum circumference of the wood to be sawed should be 40 inches. The height of the tree, normally, is decided by the tournament committee. The one who climbs the tree and cuts the wood at the top faster is the winner.

Standing Bock Chop:

The competitor fixes his block of log to the top of a straight stanchion, which is 2 feet from the ground. On getting the “Go” signal, the competitor chops the block halfway through the front side and then crosses over to the other side. The first chop from each side shall be in an upward direction.

Spring Board Chop:

It is a most spectacular one. The contestant climbs a 9-foot springboard pole using his axe and springboards provided. He stand on the top springboard (It is nothing but a plank – hard wood – 5 feet in length and 8” width and 2 inches thick) and starts chopping two thirds of the wood and then turns his body and completes the balance chipping from the other side. The time starts ticking the very second you hit the block of wood and stops when the block is chopped and hits the ground. The fastest competitor wins.

In addition to all these, there are events like (1) Birling (2) Pole climbing etc, which are included only in certain regions.
