– LUMBERJACK – PLAY THE GAME – PART II Hot Saw (Chain Saw): Individual event. Power saw limited to one cylinder
is used. Starting the saw should be manual by pulling a chord as is done
in a small generator. Each saw should have a “sprocket” cover to
keep thrown chains with the saw. The saw will be kept on the ground. The
competitor should keep his hands on top of the log. Once the “Go”
signal is sounded, the competitor bends, takes the saw and starts
cutting 3 slices of the log from one of the ends. It should be (1) one
down cut (2) one up cut, and (3) one down cut. The timing ends when the
third disk is completely separated. Underhand Chop: In the event, the competitor stands on top of the
horizontally positioned log of wood normally 2 feet long. He uses a
6-pound axe for this event. Once the Go signal is given, he should start
chipping the wood and when he comes to the halfway mark, he should turn
himself and start chipping from the other side. The timing stops only
when the block is severed completely. Axe throwing: The competitors are required to throw their axes at
“Bulls Eye”, which is positioned 5 feet from the ground. The
competitor should stand 20 feet from the bulls eye.
The axe used is a double bitted one with 2˝ pounds
weight having a total length of 24 to 40 inches (top of the eye to the
end of the handle). The blade width should be exactly 6 inches.
Competitors will be given ONE practice throw and a minimum of THREE game
throws for scoring. The area behind the target should be clear of human
beings, cattle, fowl etc. A ‘back stop’ is essential. All the events we have discussed so far form part of small and regional contests. For major contests, we will study in the next page. |
